Dollar's week: DXY flat near 102, Friday tech selloff (Weekly wrap 31 Oct 2026)
क्या हुआ
This week the US dollar index (DXY) did not move much. According to Trading Economics, on Friday 30 Oct DXY slipped to around 101.5 during the day and closed near 101.96 (down -0.08% for the day). As per Yahoo Finance data, last Friday it was around 101.81, meaning it was roughly flat for the week.
Key events of the week:
• Fed kept rates unchanged; ECB and BoJ also held rates steady
• US September PCE inflation came in at 3.6% year-on-year (core 3.1%) and Q3 GDP growth was 3.4% (annualized)
• According to CME FedWatch, the market is pricing in roughly 75% probability of a Fed rate hike in December (Trading Economics)
• Friday saw US shares fall: S&P 500 down about 1.8% and Nasdaq down roughly 3.5%, after weak results from major tech companies; for the full week S&P 500 was down about 0.9%
• Crude oil (WTI) closed around $103 per barrel, amid news of tensions in the Middle East
Friday close (Trading Economics): EUR/USD around 1.1158, GBP/USD around 1.3392, USD/JPY around 157.56, USD/INR around 95.03.
इसका मतलब
DXY = an index measuring the dollar's strength against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF). EUR has the largest weight in it, which is why EUR/USD and DXY often appear to move in opposite directions.
Lesson: This week the dollar was being pulled in different directions by two forces. High inflation data and rate hike talk tend to support the dollar. On the other hand, during times of fear in the stock market, many investors buy US government bonds, which brings bond yields down and can put pressure on the dollar (Trading Economics linked Friday's DXY decline to falling yields). Result: despite a news-packed week, DXY ended up almost where it started. This is for understanding only, not buy/sell advice.
