US ISM manufacturing PMI rises to 55.5 in October 2026
क्या हुआ
At 8:30 PM IST today the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) released its October US Manufacturing PMI report. According to ISM's own release:
• The Manufacturing PMI came in at 55.5, up from 54.5 in September. Trading Economics put the market forecast at 54.6, so the reading beat expectations
• US manufacturing expanded for the 10th month in a row
• The Production Index rose to 59.0 (56.7 in September), its highest since November 2021
• New Orders 55.5 (from 55.3), Employment 52.4 (from 52.7)
• The Prices Index (input costs) eased to 75.2 from September's 77.9, but is still far above 50
• Inventories rose back into expansion at 51.4 (from 48.6)
• Top concerns in companies' comments: pricing volatility (62%), longer lead times (41%), tariffs (25%) and the Iran war (21%)
The day so far (Trading Economics, around 10 PM IST): the dollar index (DXY) at 101.71, down 0.17%; gold at $3,963.71, up 2.27% from the previous day. Trading Economics attributes gold's rise to falling oil prices and hopes for US-Iran talks; we have not confirmed a separate reaction to the ISM data.
इसका मतलब
The ISM PMI is built from a survey of purchasing managers at US factories. Above 50 = expansion, below 50 = contraction. Markets read it as "forecast vs actual": a big surprise can move the dollar, gold and stock indices.
The Fed watches the Prices Index, because higher factory costs can later show up in inflation. This time activity picked up while the prices index softened a little, so the same report sends signals in both directions.
Lesson: read the sub-indexes (prices, orders, jobs) along with the headline, and don't draw conclusions from a single data point; the US jobs report is also due this week. This is for understanding only, not buy/sell advice.
